Reactions

Reactions let readers show appreciation for comments without writing a reply. Each comment has a simple like button (heart icon) that anyone can click.

Every comment displays a heart icon next to the reply button. Clicking it registers a “like” reaction. Click it again to remove your reaction.

Reactions are a lightweight way to:

  • Show agreement without saying “+1” or “I agree”
  • Acknowledge helpful comments
  • Surface popular comments

Authenticated users: If you’re logged into your JamComments account, your reactions are tied to your user ID. You can see which comments you’ve liked, and you can unlike them anytime.

Anonymous users: Even without an account, you can still react to comments. JamComments uses a technique called “device fingerprinting” to remember your reactions. This means:

  • You can like comments without creating an account
  • Your reactions persist across browser sessions
  • You can unlike comments you previously liked

Note: Anonymous reactions work per-device. If you like a comment on your phone, then view the same page on your laptop, the like won’t appear (until you click it again on the laptop).

Each comment shows the total number of reactions it has received. This helps readers quickly identify which comments are most appreciated by the community.

Popular comments might show “12 likes” while newer comments show “0 likes” or no count at all.

  • Reactions are stored in the database linked to your user account.
  • You can unlike a comment anytime
  • Your reactions appear on all devices when logged in
  • A “fingerprint” of your device/browser is created (not personally identifiable).
  • It’s used only to track which comments you’ve liked.
  • No personal information is collected.

Anonymous reactions use browser fingerprinting, which some privacy-conscious users may want to know about. This technique creates a unique identifier based on browser characteristics (screen size, fonts, etc.) but does NOT:

  • Track you across different websites
  • Collect personal information
  • Store cookies (unless you create an account)
  • Share data with third parties

If a user is concerned about fingerprinting, they can create a free JamComments account — authenticated users don’t use fingerprinting at all.
